In today’s digital landscape, an eCommerce website is far more than just an online catalogue; it is the engine of your business. Over the years at Shoga Ltd, we’ve seen that the most successful online retailers are those who move beyond “out-of-the-box” solutions to create platforms tailored specifically to their operational needs and customer behaviours.
But what actually makes an eCommerce site effective? To answer that, I want to take a look at a recent project we are incredibly proud of: the new website for Thompsons Ltd.
1. Integration is Everything
An effective eCommerce site shouldn’t be an island. If your website doesn’t talk to your warehouse, you’re headed for a logistical nightmare.
For Thompsons Ltd, we avoided the limitations of standard templates by building a bespoke codebase. This allowed us to create a seamless, real-time integration with Modern Seller, their stock and inventory management platform. When a product sells or a stock level changes in the warehouse, the website reflects it instantly. This “single source of truth” reduces manual admin, prevents overselling, and ensures customer trust.
2. Strategic Merchandising: Cross-Sells and Up-Sells
With a product catalogue as vast as Thompsons’, helping a customer find exactly what they need—and suggesting what they might have missed—is vital for increasing Average Order Value (AOV).
We engineered the site architecture to intelligently promote cross-sells and up-sells across a multitude of categories. By understanding the relationships between the thousands of items in their range, we can present customers with relevant add-ons and premium alternatives at the exact moment they are ready to buy. It’s about being helpful, not pushy, and making a huge catalogue feel manageable.
3. Visibility Through Search Optimisation
You can have the best products in the world, but they won’t sell if no one can find them. A core pillar of our development process is a “Search First” philosophy.
The Thompsons site was developed from the ground up to be lean, fast, and highly optimised for organic Google search. From the technical SEO structure to the way we handle site speed, we ensured that Google’s crawlers can easily index every category, giving Thompsons a competitive edge in organic rankings without relying solely on paid traffic.
4. Maximising the Power of Google Shopping
For many eCommerce businesses, Google Shopping is their most effective sales channel. However, standard plugins often produce “messy” data feeds that lead to wasted ad spend.
For Thompsons, we developed a bespoke built Google Shopping feed. This custom solution gives us granular control over how product data is communicated to Google for both organic listings and paid advertising. By providing high-quality, accurate data, we improve the relevancy of their ads, lower the cost-per-click, and ensure their products appear in front of the right buyers at the right time.
Developing an effective eCommerce website isn’t about following the latest design trends; it’s about solving specific business problems. Whether it’s integrating complex inventory systems like Modern Seller or building custom tools to dominate Google Shopping, your platform should be built to scale.
At Shoga Ltd, we don’t just build websites; we build commercial tools. If you’re looking to take your online store to the next level, let’s have a conversation about how a bespoke approach could transform your results.
